Snowmobile Safari in Finland (8 days)

Norwegian Fjords and Arctic Sea Snowmobile Safari

Do you really know your driving abilities? Driving your own snowmobile on this once in a lifetime safari will see you travelling approximately 900km in total, nearly the entire length of Finnish Lapland into Norway until you finally reach the magnificent Norwegian fjords and the Arctic Sea.
You will drive through the varying terrain, through snow-covered forest, across vast frozen lakes and open fell and through snow. Of course you want to experience everything Lapland has to offer so we have included a visit to a reindeer farm with a reindeer sleigh ride, a dip into the Arctic Sea (in specially insulated suits) and even the opportunity to sample some unique foods such as giant Russian crab, whale and reindeer (these are optional). When you return home you will have the sense of having achieved something very special, memories that will last forever. Imagine the stories you will have to tell your friends and family!

Please note: this snowmobile safari is subject to minimum number of 4 participants.
Please note: The itinerary, accommodation and Northern Lights on this snowmobile safari cannot be guaranteed, and may change at any time as these are subject to local weather conditions each day, time of the year and suitability of the trails etc

Day 1 - Sunday: Arrive at the airport and transfer to your hotel in Sodankylä. You will have the evening to relax, maybe trying the Finnish sauna.  We suggest an early night in preparation for the week ahead. Overnight - Sodankylä

Day 2 - Monday: You will begin the day reasonably early. After receiving your equipment you will have an instruction on managing your snowmobile, including the safety aspects. Starting at an easy pace you will soon reach an area of beautiful frozen lakes separated by untouched forest. It is a good way to practice your snowmobile driving on the varying terrain, long flat stretches on the lakes and more curved changing gradients through the forests. This first day will conclude at the little village of Lokka where a friendly reindeer herder, with the help of a translator, tells you about his work with reindeers. You even have the opportunity to drive a reindeer pulled sleigh, an unforgettable experience! Our reindeer farmer and his wife are hosting dinner this evening at their home. Overnight Lokka in log cabins

Day 3 - Tuesday: Today's snowmobile journey takes you across many lakes, including the largest man made lake in Europe with pretty yellow and red houses dotted on its shores. Rising above the lakes you will see the magnificent mountains of the Saariselkä area. At different times of the season the sky has beautiful pink hues or it is crystal clear blue offering you unparalleled views of the whole area. You climb steadily throughout the morning stopping on the top of beautiful Kiilopää for lunch. Overnight - Lake Inari Area.

Day 4 - Wednesday: After a reasonably short snowmobile ride you will visit the fascinating Siida museum of Inari where you will learn about the history, culture and lifestyle of the indigenous Lappish people, the Sami. Upon leaving, you head at an exhilarating faster pace across Lake Inari. You really will feel like an intrepid arctic adventurer when you are in the middle of the huge lake Inari surrounded by snow, with the metre thick ice below and seeing nothing but white. The border crossing into Norway will be late in the afternoon, arriving at the lovely riverside cabins of Neiden in Norway only a short distance away from the Arctic Sea. Overnight - Neiden.

Day 5 - Thursday: We start this morning along a frozen river towards the fjords and the edge of the Arctic Sea. In celebration of your achievement, having reached the Arctic Sea we celebrate with a dip into the freezing sea, using fully insulated 'survival suits'. Yet another amazing adventure! Overnight - Neiden.

Day 6 - Friday: Today will be the longest driving day, approximately 200kms. This will give you the opportunity to really test the skills you have been perfecting earlier in the week and push yourself to you limit.  Overnight - Kakslauttnen area.

Day 7 - Saturday: The final day through a range of fairly easy but inspiring terrain until you reach Sodankylä. If you have the energy you can try a night out in town.

Day 8 - Sunday: After a relaxing morning and lunch return to the airport for your flight home proud in the knowledge of having achieved something very special and knowing that you have mastered the fine art of arctic snowmobile driving.
